What is SMA?

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is an inherited disease of the motor nerves that causes muscle weakness and atrophy. The motor nerves control the muscles that are used for activities such as breathing, crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. Approximately 1 in 6,000 babies are affected by SMA, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers.

This is a devastating disease. But, there is hope. The FDA has approved the first ever therapy for SMA and there are currently 18 ongoing clinical trials of other drugs, made possible in part through fundraising efforts like this one.
